Larry the Cat: An Unlikely Celebrity

There’s been many questions in the United Kingdom surrounding the change of Prime Ministers. One underlying question that many people have been wondering however is:

What will happen to Larry the Cat?

Today, on 13th July 2016, the United Kingdom sees a replacement of Prime Minister as David Cameron steps down and Theresa May takes over. There has been very mixed views on this changeover. While many people have been celebrating that the Prime Minister is finally a woman since Margaret Thatcher, others complain she is not fit for the job.

For those of you who may not be aware of who Larry the Cat is, here’s a little background information on one of Britain’s favourite feline fellas;

Larry is a rescue cat from the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and was chosen by Downing Street staff to help contain Number 10 Downing Street’s rat problem. Given the title ‘Chief Mouser’, Larry the Cat has been in charge of catching rats since 2011. Since then, Larry has greeted many people to the Prime Minister’s home, including President Obama, and is considered a Civil Servant.

There has been much talk over the past few days though around the change of Prime Minister. One particular question is what will happen Larry the Cat when Cameron resigns? Will he be evicted from Number 10 Downing Street?

But really, what will happen to Larry the Cat? Will he get to stay at 10? Can I adopt him? Does he have to keep living with David Cameron?

However, David Cameron answered the question on everyone’s minds in his last ever Prime Minister’s Questions. He stated that Larry the Cat belongs to the staff of Number 10, not him personally.

This means that Larry the Cat shall keep his residence at Number 10, much to the public’s delight.

Many people also questioned the relationship between David Cameron and Larry the Cat, claiming that the two do not get along. Cameron addressed the question by presenting an image of Larry the Cat looking very happy cuddled on his lap, which was met by many laughs from MPs in the House of Commons.

Larry the Cat seemed to be enjoying his time alone in Number 10 during the change of Prime Ministers today.

This drama just goes to show that in the face of adversity surrounding British politics, the people of Britain like to continue to find the best in a situation and deal with it in a, well, very British way.
