EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Skyward Story

Publish date: 2024-05-14

Skyward Story are a Baltimore-based pop rock trio who were formally known as 3PM. Now the group are back with a new name, new member, and new single. Their latest track is titled ‘Hey‘ and was produced by renowned producer Matt Squire who has worked with One Direction, Panic At The Disco and many more.

Here we speak to the boys about the song, name change, tour news and lots more.

Growing up who were your musical influences?

Brandon and Scott shared a love for almost every pop punk which made them start the band together. Aaron grew up listening to everything from hardcore to rap, and the combination of these influences is probably the biggest factor behind our unique sound.

Why did you guys decide to change your name?

Last October we finalised the lineup of the band when Aaron joined as the lead vocalist. This took our music, style, image, etc. a new direction and we felt it was time for a change. The name Skyward Story has a meaning close to our hearts because we work so hard to mould our lives around the band, therefore we feel if you put your mind to it, you can write your own story and the sky is the limit.

How has the group dynamic changed since adding a new member?

We have always been a three-piece and that’s one of our favourite parts of this bands. The three of us get along so well and are the best of friends. Our minds work as one and because of that we can so easily make decisions, write music together, and just have a great time while on the road.

What is the inspiration behind your new single?

While in the studio writing our forthcoming album we realised a bunch of our demos were love songs, so then we thought, “why not make fun of ourselves?” The line “stupid little love songs” refers to our own songs, and it sits on top of upbeat instrumentation that represents how we feel about being in a band and getting to write and play music every day.

You have worked with Matt Squire on this new record, what was it like working with him?

Matt is such a good friend of ours and we have amazing chemistry when in the studio together. We broke out of our comfort zone for this record because we decided it was time to create that distinct sound. He shared the same vision for this band and our music, so we had very few roadblocks when writing music. It was incredible how well the writing flowed and we could not be prouder of this album.

How would you describe your sound?

A goal of ours this time around in the studio was to create something new, something that people haven’t heard before, and something that when people hear our music they’ll instantly think “this MUST be Skyward Story.” Taking inspirations from all around the music world including pop, pop punk, and our individual favourite bands we feel we created a Skyward Story sound that we’re so proud of. It’s fun, will put a smile on your ace, and make you want to sing along to every word.

Can fans expect a tour from you this year?

Absolutely. We have some things in the works right now that we can’t share quite yet, but we plan to hit the road as Skyward Story for the first time very soon.

If you could collaborate with any artist who would you choose?

That’s a really tough question because there are so many bands that have had a huge impact on us. If we HAD to choose one, we would love to tour or write music with All Time Low. Being Baltimore natives with very similar musical inspirations and aspirations, we feel that we would collab great together.

What do you hope to achieve in the next ten years?

Not only do we want this band to change our lives, but we want to change the lives of others. We want our music to have in impact so strong that our current fans will still love us ten years from now, and love the songs we release then just as much as the ones we release now. If they can relate to our music and we can help people get out of a dark place then we’ve done our job. We’re fans of bands that have deeply impacted multiple generations, and becoming one of those bands is our dream accomplishment.
